The Race for Connor McDavid Will Go Down to the Wire

Count me among the Buiffalo Sabres’ fans who are openly rooting against them with each remaining game they play.

The Sabres currently sit 30th among NHL teams with 47 points while the Arizona Coyotes have 50 points and the Edmonton Oilers are next with 53 points.

The team that finishes last in the league is guaranteed no less than the second pick in June’s NHL draft. and will have a 20% chance to land the top pick. The weighted lottery system provides the other bottom four teams will odds of 13.5%, 11.5%, 9.5% and 8.5%, respectively to land the top pick this year.connor mcdavid

This year’s top pick is almost guaranteed to be center Connor McDavid. The 18 year-old McDavid just finished his OHL regular season with the Eerie Otters by scoring 44 goals and registering 76 assists for 120 points while only playing in 47 games. That gives McDavid an average of 2.55 points per game. To put that in perspective, Sidney Crosby averaged 2.77 ppg and Eric Lindros averaged 2.61 ppg in their best OHL seasons.

There is no doubt the 6′ 1″, 195 lb. McDavid has the makings of a future NHL star who could make an impact in the league as early as next season. Any team in the league would love to have him, but the Sabres have really gutted their team to acquire young talent and draft picks as part of their rebuilding of the Sabres’ franchise by general manager, Tim Murray. McDavid has always been the player they have eyed as the one who would revitalize the team that has always been viewed as a blue-collar team.

The Sabres and Coyotes play two more times before the regular season ends and the results of these games could be crucial to finishing last place in the league and securing a top-two pick.

Depending on the team, the second pick in this June’s NHL draft figures to be American-born center Jack Eichel who is also considered a game-changer. Nevertheless, McDavid is considered the top prize with Eichel a distant second.

And that’s…as I see it!
