Puyol is the Latest Soccer Star to be Linked to MLS

Add former Spain international and Barcelona defender Carles Puyol to the list of big name players rumored to have MLS in their future. Real Madrid’s Chicharito Hernandez and Paris Saint-Germain’s have recently been linked to MLS when their contracts expire.puyol

Puyol, 37, scored the lone goal in the 2010 World Cup as Spain defeated the Netherlands 1-0. He retired after the 2013-20014 season due to chronic knee problems the majority of his final two seasons.

The MLS team rumored to be after Puyol are the Colorado Rapids although some think he would be better suited in New York where he is currently living and supposedly training for a possible return to the pitch.

Another possibility for Puyol if he were to come out of retirement would be to play in the Middle East in Quatar which is hosting the 2022 World Cup.

While adding a former star to MLS is always enticing, I am not keen on adding Puyol. He was a rugged defender who was very strong in the air, but I doubt he would make much impact at his age after sitting out a year. MLS should save their money and try to bring in another offensive-minded player. Americans like scoring in sports they play or watch. The more players MLS brings in with strong technical skills, the more the quality of play will continue to rise.

And that’s as I see it!
