Has Van Gaal found Rooney’s True Position?

Ever since Wayne Rooney was a young lad, he has excelled at scoring goals from the striker, winger, or withdrawn forward position. Yet, the Manchester United captain has played mostly from the central midfield position this year and is, arguably, having one of his best seasons ever.rooney

Before joining Everton at age 9, Rooney was spotted by an Everton scout the year he scored 99 goals. He has scored 47 international goals for England and added another 230 for United. You would think it would be crazy to move Rooney off the front line, but that is exactly what new United boss and former Netherlands’ manager Louis Van Gaal  has done this season.

Rooney is very energetic on the pitch using his strength and physicality to his advantage. He is also a very technical player who is very creative in his playmaking abilities which proves he might be better suited to attack out of the midfield. Rooney’s work rate is one of the best in the game and he covers a lot of ground in the midfield which is essential when breaking up passing lanes of opponents.

When employed as the lone forward with playmaking midfielders around him, Rooney has shown he can set his teammates up for goals as they run off his passes. He is still capable of a spectacular finish as evidenced by a recent game against Aston Villa where he received a cross from Angel Di Maria, brought it down, then struck a beautiful right-footed strike into the back of the net.

Van Gaal seems to have found the recipe for success for United. His use of Rooney is one of his best decisions since moving to Old Trafford.

And that’s as I see it!
