Jose Mourinho Proves he is the Game’s Best Tactician

Chelsea defeated Manchester United 1-0 last week despite United boss Louis van Gaal calling it the team’s best performance of the season. United seemed to dominate Chelsea with 67% possession, but Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho’s game plan worked to perfection as his team won an important English Premier League match.mourinho-jose-424737

Mourinho’s approach to the game was not to lose and control play where it mattered most- in their own defensive third of the field. United outshot Chelsea 15-7, but many of those shots were not dangerous due to Mourinho’s tactical approach of having some of his more skilled players take more of a workman-like approach on the pitch.

Defender Kurt Zouma was moved to the midfield to basically shut down United midfielder Marouane Fellaini who had been dominating play going into the match. Midfielders like Oscar and Cesc Fabregas are skilled players that Mourinho needed to focus on their work rate rather than creativity if his plan was to be successful.

A nifty back heal by Oscar led to an Eden Hazard strike that was the difference in the match that allowed Chelsea to not only avoid a loss, but pick up a crucial three points in the standings.

Any good manager knows when to alter tactical formations or philosophies depending on the strengths of an opponent. In my opinion, no coach out there today does it better than Jose Mourinho who has Chelsea atop the EPL standings with a comfortable ten point lead over second-place Arsenal and eleven point lead over third-place United.

And that’s as I see it!
