NFLPA Should Indeed Pursue Collusion Charges if Dez Bryant and Demaryius Thomas Do Not Sign Long-Term Deals

NFL teams are now one day away from signing their franchise-tagged players to long-term deals or the player must play on the one-year franchise tender and cannot sign long-term deals until after the upcoming season. Two of the contract situations the NFL Player’s Association are interested in are those of Dez Bryant and Demaryius Thomas.dez and demaryius

Both Bryant and Thomas are seeking long-term deals similar to Calvin Johnson’s 16.2 million per season. This scares owners because the contracts of Bryant and Johnson will set the market for wide receivers. Yes, Johnson makes 16.2 million, but his contract was given before the current rookie scale and the Cowboys and Broncos feel Johnson’s contract value would be less than his current salary.

The NFLPA says it has information from a credible source that the Cowboys and Broncos are working together to set the market for Bryant and Thomas who entered the league in 2010. It is legal for players and their agents to work together to drive up salaries, but illegal for teams to work together to try and keep the market down.

I agree that 16 million is pretty high for non-quarterbacks, but difference makers like Bryant and Thomas should be getting in the 13.5 to 14 million range. Bryant has made 11.8 million through his first five seasons, and Thomas has earned 14.1 million through his first five years.

The 12.8 million one-year franchise tender that Bryant and Thomas can make this year is nothing to turn your nose up at, but these players need to think about their future. If either player were to suffer a career ending injury this year, they are not guaranteed any money beyond this season which is why both players are unhappy being franchise tagged.

Sports are a business for players as much as owners. If indeed the Cowboys and Broncos colluded to try to set the market for their star receivers, then they should be penalized accordingly.

And that’s as I see it!
