How is Reggie Wayne Still Not Signed?

After having spent the first 14 seasons of his career playing in Indianapolis catching passes from Colts’ quarterbacks like Peyton Manning and Andrew Luck, Reggie Wayne was not offered a contract and allowed to find a new team or retire. With training camps set to open later this month, Wayne remains unsigned, but says he would love to play a 15th season before hanging up his cleats. Reggie_Wayne

Wayne holds the Colts’ record for games played with 211 where he recorded 1,070 catches for 14,345 yards, and 82 touchdowns. He has always been a strong route runner with great hands. There are many teams in the league with receiver issues who could use Wayne’s talents. Some could make the playoffs while others have young receiving corps who could benefit from Wayne’s tutelage. Here are some possible landing spots I see as good fits for Wayne.

In no particular order.

1. Kansas City Chiefs- The Chiefs brought in former Philadelphia Eagle Jeremy Maclin to improve their receiving corps. De’Anthony Thomas is set to start alongside Maclin which shows quarterback Alex Smith could use a reliable receiver like Wayne coming across the middle to move the chains.

2. Cleveland Browns- Josh Gordon is suspended for the season so the Browns signed former Chief Dwayne Bowe who has seen better days and Brian Hartline who is an underrated possession receiver. Wayne would be an excellent security blanket for whatever quarterback lines up under center.

3. Jacksonville Jaguars- Not sure Wayne would want to play for a struggling franchise such as the Jaguars to end his career, but, at 36, he is better than current starters Marquise Lee and Allen Robinson. I would rather see Wayne retire than land here.

4. Miami Dolphins-  The thought of ending his career where he attended college and was a member of “The U” could be intriguing to Wayne. The Dolphins traded Mike Wallace to the Vikings and replaced him with the inconsistent Kenny Stills and Greg Jennings who hasn’t been relevant since he left the frozen tundra of Lambeau Field. I do love slot receiver Jarvis Landry coming off a successful rookie year, but Wayne could definitely help the Dolphins who signed quarterback Ryan Tannehill to a long-term deal hoping he could return them to the playoffs.

5. New England Patriots- How weird would it be to see Wayne playing for the team that has been his arch-nemesis throughout his career? Julian Edelman is their top receiver, but Brandon Lafell and Danny Amendola are injury prone and inconsistent. Brady to Wayne to help the Pats defeat the Colts and head to next year’s Super Bowl has a nice ring to it.

6. Seattle Seahawks- Quarterback Russell Wilson has been able to get it down without a star receiver as he throws to a solid, but unspectacular group of receivers that include Doug Baldwin, Jermaine Kearse, and Ricardo Lockette. Maybe Wayne could end his career winning another Super Bowl.

7. St. Louis Rams- The Rams have not had a dominant receiver since Torry Holt left. There are many receivers on this team who contribute, but Coach Jeff Fisher never knows who it will be from one week to the next. Tavon Austin has been inconsistent and never come close to the expectations people had for him coming out of West Virginia. Kenny Britt, Chris Givens, and Brian Quick need to bring it each week. A guy like Wayne could really show these receivers the type of commitment and preparation it takes during practice, film session, and games to bring their play to new heights.

There you have it! Wayne may sign with someone else or retire altogether. But, I see these seven teams as his best bets to get consistent playing time and contribute in a final season to an illustrious career.

And that’s as I see it!
